Cape Cod Camping

This past weekend, Labor Day Weekend, Owen, Evan and I went camping at Peter's Pond in Sandwich, right off exit 2 on the Cape. I had a gift certificate I needed to use, and it gave us an opportunity to get one last warm weather trip in. We got in late on Friday night, and had t deal with the campground not having the reservation. After 20 minutes, they figured out that they had me under the name Askins, and Owen and Evan giggled he rest of the night about that. Never mind that I had the confirm number and the site location. We set up in the dark, and pretty much went right to bed.

Saturday, we rode the bikes around the campground and checked it out. Peter's Pond has a lot of season rentals with huge Breckenridge trailers and full screen rooms attached. You could tell that there were a lot of mini communities scattered throughout the campground. After a mid morning snack, we packed the bikes on the car and drove to Harwich to do some of the Cape Cod Rail Trail. We packed some waters and snacks, and headed out, starting at mile 8. We stopped for a snack about 3 miles in at a salt marsh, and then rode all the way to mile 18. From there, we left the trail and headed two miles to Nauset Light Beach where we saw the Nauset Lighthouse and the Three Sisters Lighthouses. The beach there looked very nice, and it had some real big waves. We then left there and headed back to the trail.

On the way back, we stopped at mile 17 or so for lunch at Arnold's Lobster and Clam Bar. Evan and I stayed with the chicken, but Owen went for the fish and chips. After eating, a gentleman gave us three free passes to the mini golf course attached to Arnold's, so we played a nice round of mini golf. we hopped back on our bikes for the remaining nine miles back to the car. Owen was still cruising, but Evan started to lag a bit. We stopped in Brewster to tighten the pedal on my bike, and the rest of the way I gave Evan boosts by riding side by side while pushing him with my right hand. We got moving at a pretty good clip, and got back to the car around 6. I think all of us agreed that the last 2 miles were the longest of the trip. That night, back at the campsite, we went to the "drive-in"at the ball field and watched Paul Blart: Mall Cop.

Sunday we had more bike rides around the sites, and then we headed out to do some letter boxing. We did two multiple stamp series that were pretty cool. Evan was the eagle eye as he spotted a number of the clues for us. We did some fishing (almost caught a duck), had dinner, and played some cards that night. We got up Monday, packed up, and rushed home to see Mom and Liam, who stayed back for some quality time.
