Champs

The Cape vacation was interrupted this year on Wednesday night, July 7th for a trip to Gillette Stadium for the completion of the NSFFL Invitation Flag Football Tournament.

Evan had been selected with nine other players to form the NH Hurricanes. They had previously won their two games in Lynn to secure the number one seed in this single elimination tournament. They were to face off against teams mostly from the North Shore, including Peabody, Lynn, and Salisbury.

We arrived early and met up with our fan contingent that included Auntie Lois and Dominic, Michelle and Dennis, Emily, and Auntie Annette, who happened to be the ONLY fan in the stands with a sign. GO EVAN was proudly displayed and waved. Anytime Evan made a play, or even just came off the field for a cup of water, Auntie Annette waved the sign and the rest of us hooted and hollered. Evan enjoyed the attention, but he easily turned all shades of red to match his shirt color.

Evan's team took the field for their first game and against their buddies from the NH Tornadoes. The Tornadoes had just ran all over a team from Lynn. Evan was surprised to learn that he would be starting the game on defense, in the Monster, or blitz LB position. After a slow start, he was soon wreaking havoc in the backfield, and he saved a long touchdown throw by sacking the quarterback just as he threw a bomb that was caught. The referees ruled the play dead, and thanks to Evan, that would be the closest any team would get to scoring against this stifling defense. The offense was an aerial show right out of the Don Coryell playbook. Quick slants and crossing patterns set up wide open post and go routes that no defense could match up with.

At the end of the evening, the Hurricanes had rolled to a perfect 3-0 record, with all three games being won by an average of 28-0. The boys proudly displayed their new hardware in the group picture, and bathed in the glory at the stadium of their heroes.

Evan finished with 4 sacks that day, and a number of other tackles. Great job, Evan. Cherish this moment for the rest of your life.
